Corporate gifts for clients: what works and what to skip

How to choose corporate gifts for clients in India: picking the right tier, keeping branding subtle, writing the note and timing the delivery.

A client gift has one job: to make the person feel valued by your company, not marketed to. That sounds obvious, yet a lot of client gifting still looks like a trade show bag with a nicer ribbon.

Sort clients into tiers before you pick anything

Start with a list, not a catalogue. Most companies end up with three groups:

  • Key accounts and decision makers, who get the best gift and a personal note from leadership
  • Regular clients, who get a good gourmet or wellness box
  • Vendors and partners, who get a smaller thank you that still looks thoughtful

Once the tiers are clear, the budget per box usually decides itself, and all three tiers can go in one order with one invoice.

Keep the logo quiet

Clients already receive plenty of merchandise. The gifts they remember rarely have a logo on every item. A foil stamped lid, a ribbon in your brand colour and a note card with your name are enough. Leave the products themselves clean.

The best client gift is something they would not buy for themselves, but will use every week.

What tends to land well

Safe bets

  • Gourmet hampers with tea, coffee and good chocolate
  • A premium desk piece in wood, brass or leather
  • Wellness boxes for clients who seem to have everything
  • Festive hampers timed for Diwali or the new year

What to skip

  • Alcohol, unless you know the person and their company's policy
  • Anything that needs a size or a colour preference
  • Gift cards, which feel like a transaction rather than a thank you
  • Large items that are awkward to carry home from the office

The note matters more than the gift

Ask the account owner to write two or three lines in their own words that mention something specific from the year: a project, a launch, a long evening before a deadline. Printed on a card inside the box, it turns a good gift into one people remember.

Time it right. Gifts that arrive on the day of a festival get lost in the pile. Aim for the week before the rush, or send a year end gift in the first week of January, when desks are quieter.
